The 10-Year-Old All-Star team is meant to recognize players that have excelled in regular season play through game performance, baseball skill, fair-play, and positive attitude to represent the SLL community in a competitive, intra-district, postseason tournament and if successful, higher level tournaments.
In summary, Managers in Majors (when applicable) will review all 10-year-old players playing at this level and vote on whether they believe the players have earned a spot on the 10-year-old team. The vote must be unanimous or no less than one vote short of unanimous. If a player is not voted in, his/her name is added to the list of Players from AAA for a vote by the AAA Managers (the number of Majors Managers votes received by this player will be added to the pool of AAA Manager votes received). The Majors Commissioner then makes a presentation to the AAA Managers advocating the strengths and weaknesses of that 10-year-old player for consideration in the AAA Managers' voting. Players and Managers from AAA will each vote for 12* Players. The top combined 12 vote recipients from the Manager and Player voting are placed on the All-Star team. The chosen All-Star Manager may then select 1-2 additional players and/or replace the 11th or 12th player; however, they must be from the remaining pool of the top 16 vote recipients. This creates a total roster of 12-14 players. (A roster size of fewer than 13 players allows a team to officially have one manager and one coach named to the team. A roster size of 13-14 allows a team to officially have one manager and two coaches named to the team.).
* When players are posted to the team from Majors by the above process, the number of players voted on will be reduced by the number voted in from Majors.
Example: Two 10-year-olds play Majors and only one is voted in by the Majors Managers onto the 10-year-old team. The other 10-year-old is added to the nomination list for the AAA Manager vote and the AAA players and Managers then vote for a total of 12 players.
- Step 1 - In Season Evaluation
- Managers will be given rosters of each team in their division by age (this enables them to identify players in each age group prior to the nomination process and familiarize themselves with the boys).
- Step 2 - Peer Input and Voting
- At the end of the game on the last Saturday of the regular season in May (alternate time will be determined for teams not scheduled to play on that date):
-
- Majors and AAA Players are given a numbered ballot with all 10-year-old players listed.
- Players vote for up to 12 players they feel deserve to be on the All-Star team (less any number of players placed on team by a vote of the Majors managers).
- Step 3 - Manager Input and Voting
- Prior to the meeting, Managers will be provided with player statistics collected and compiled by the Head Scorekeeper and MVP votes provided by the Player Agent.
- Managers will be given a numbered ballot with all 10-year-old players.
- The Majors Commissioner then makes a presentation to the AAA Managers advocating the strengths and weaknesses of that 10-year-old player for consideration in the AAA Managers' voting.
- Managers from the AAA teams will speak on behalf of their players that they feel should be selected to the all-star team.
- By closed, secret ballot, they vote for 12 players (less any number of players placed on team by a vote of the Majors managers).
- It is not a given that a 10-year playing in Majors will get an automatic spot. They must have the Majors Managers consensus to automatically make the team. If they do not have that, they will be included in the general pool of players for voting by AAA Managers.
*If a Manager is not able to attend, they must make alternate voting arrangements with the AAA Commissioner.
- Step 4 - SLL Board Tournament Selection Committee Review
- The Tournament Selection Committee of the SLL Board will meet to combine the list of player selection from player votes and Manager votes.
- Consolidate Player votes to a single list of top 16 in order of votes.
- Consolidate Manager votes to a single list of top 16 in order of votes.
- Consolidate Player top 16 vote recipients with Manager's top 16 vote recipients to come up with a combined list of the top 12 vote recipients
- Step 5 - Manager Selection
- Commissioners to ask all AAA Managers/Coaches (or Major Manager/Coach with a 10-year-old) the following:
- Would you be willing to coach or manage if your son/daughter is selected to the 10-year-old All-Star team?
- Would you be willing to coach or manage if your son/daughter is not selected to the 10-year-old All-Star team?
- Other than yourself, is there anyone that you would recommend to manage the 10-year-old All-Star team(s)?
Based on the response, the AAA Commissioner (and Majors commissioner when applicable) will bring to the Board their recommendations for the 10-Year-Old All-Star Manager to vote on at the regularly scheduled Board meeting in June.
- Step 6 - Elected All-Star Manager Selections
- The chosen All-Star Manager may then select 1-2 additional players and/or replace the 11th or 12th player; however, they must be from the remaining pool of the top 16 vote recipients. If this option is made, the All-Star Manager must represent their reasons to the Tournament Selection Committee composed of members from the Board. Changes should reflect the need to balance the team with skills. This creates a total roster of 12-14 players.
The Manager may conduct this selection based upon a tryout of the remaining pool of the top 16 vote recipients. However, the tryout may not occur prior to June 15 or two weeks prior to the start of the tournament, whichever is earlier.
The 10-Year-Old All-Star Manager will select a Coach and Assistant Coach preferably from the list of parents who have children on the All-Star team. If a Coach or Assistant Coach is selected that is not a parent of a player selected to the All-Star team then the Manager must represent his reasons to the Tournament Selection Committee for concurrence. Ratification of the Coach and Assistant Coach is then voted on by the Board prior to the start of tournament play.
- Step 7 - Posting of Roster
- The 10-Year-Old All-Star Team is posted on the web site and in a kiosk near the Snack Shack once the Team Formation is finalized through the procedures above.
